Is retirement boring?

Is retirement boring?

Is retirement boring?

I have chatted to a few friends and sometimes randomers about the glorious dream of FIRE and it still surprises me the amount of skepticism that surrounds it. I guess that the FIRE movement is a relatively new phenomenon, or rather, relatively new in coming to the limelight. People have been doing it successfully for years already!

So I asked people, “Why the skepticism and uncertainty around FIRE?”

All the answers included some form of “it would get boring” or “I wouldn’t know what to do with the time?”

They use that as an excuse to gloss over FIRE and never give it a second thought. But I always think, all that free time….WOW! I can’t wait to fill it with amazing, new experiences!

What would these experiences be? Who knows! But I do have an ever growing list.

The Retirement List

Ride my bike everyday
Spend a year following the winter to snowboard for that year
Learn a second language (properly)
Learn a third language
Tour the United States on a motorbike for months
Hike all the trails in Ireland
Go on hiking trips around the world (Inca trail, etc…)
Slow travel around Central and South America
Slow travel around Asia
Write a book
Have a garden
Grow my own food in that garden
Read a book a week (maybe start off with a month)
Family time
Catch up with friends regularly
Home renovations (done completely by myself)
Build a house from scratch
Travel down the Pacific Coast highway in an RV with my parents (Mum’s wish-list)
Play video games (I’m a child at heart)
Play more sports
Exercise regularly (this should probably be higher on the list)

this list isn’t complete so I will add regularly to the list but please do send a few ideas my way if I have left out an must have experience in your book?

I needed to write a post like this in order to take a break from the “finance” talk because this isn’t a blog about numbers, but one of my experience that I want to share on this journey, including my motivations to get me through!

    1. Great list! I also don’t understand the skepticism around FIRE, or even just FI. The freedom to say, work part time in a job I actually like is even appealing to me. I think every list is a personal thing so nothing to add to your already great one. I would like to give back to the community somehow, and just spend more time with my people. Good luck!!

    2. To answer your question: No, retirement isn’t boring in general! But sure, it can be boring sometimes, but work life as a teacher was boring to me sometimes too. Like you, most of the people I’ve spoken to about FIRE are skeptical.
Meanwhile, I LOVE your list!!! Very exciting to see your plans.
      Cheers, Dragon Gal
